SA likes to believe it is the leading country on the continent, with the biggest this and the largest that and the most expensive plans to build unnecessary infrastructure. But Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo plans to bust President Jacob Zuma’s long-held record of appointing the world’s largest ministerial team in relation to its population. SA has 68 ministers and deputies for its 51.8-million citizens, compared with the UK’s 21 ministers for 64-million people. Our monster-sized squad costs more than R1bn a year and, judging from Parliament’s inquiry into the SABC and the Constitutional Court’s judgment on social grants, citizens get very little in return for that massive spending. After two months in office, Akufo-Addo announced the appointment of 110 ministers and deputies, which is 50% bigger than SA’s ministerial team and three times the size of Nigeria’s, where the population is seven times bigger than Ghana’s.
