SA’s university system is on fire. Student protests and riots are raging. Campus buildings are being set ablaze. Bystanders and the police are in the cross hairs as they clash with demonstrators. Higher education in SA is on the verge of collapse, as the calls for free tuition have gripped the country, and some campuses have closed for the year in response to the violence. Public opinion is starting to turn against the protesters as many esteemed academic institutions come under attack. Despite the inequities, real and perceived, SA is fortunate to have the education system it does — certainly when compared to much of the rest of the continent. And despite the deluge of contentious issues from the University of the Witwatersrand to the University of Cape Town, it is still the best system anywhere in Africa. What the protesters have to realise is that ultimately, the money has to come from somewhere. Nothing is ever free. It is just a question of who pays. The #FeesMustFall protester...
