The Sweden-based scientists say the continent is vulnerable to conflict linked to weather fluctuations
Researchers have urged African leaders to prioritise tackling climate change, saying the issue is one of the most serious factors in terms of migration and displacement. Ahead of the AU summit in Ethiopia, which ends on Monday, researchers at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) said climate change threatens peace and security on the continent and Africa needs a clear climate security strategy and strategic leadership. “Ongoing reform within the AU and the upcoming AU summit provide an opportunity to showcase leadership and develop adequate responses to climate-related security risks,” the researchers said in a report published at the weekend.
