The official state memorial for deceased struggle veteran Ahmed Kathrada, which was supposed to take place on Saturday, has been cancelled, his foundation announced on Friday. His widow, Barbara Hogan, the former minister of public enterprises, is due to give the reasons for the cancellation at 4pm on Friday, and read a brief joint statement from the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The development comes after President Jacob Zuma effected a far-reaching Cabinet reshuffle late on Thursday night, with Pravin Gordhan and Mcebisi Jonas among those who got the axe. Former tourism minister, Derek Hanekom, who is the chairman of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, also got the chop. Zuma’s move has been widely condemned both within and outside of the ANC. Kathrada died on Tuesday and was given a rousing send-off on Wednesday when struggle veterans and stalwarts, including former president Kgalema Motlanthe, gave moving speeches that were underlined by their criticis...
