Champion trainer Sean Tarry has once again called up top jockey Piere Strydom to partner his talented four-year-old, Samurai Blade, to get the gelding’s career back on track. Strydom will partner the son of Where’s That Tiger in Saturday’s 1,800m Drum Star Handicap at Turffontein. Samurai Blade could only manage third place behind Romany Prince in the London News Handicap in January — it halted the horse’s hat-trick bid after Strydom had scored on the Tarry inmate at the Vaal in December. In the Vaal race, Samurai Blade beat Top Shot by nearly three lengths and trainer Gary Alexander’s five-year-old is a staggering 10.5kg better off at the weights in Saturday’s race. It means Strydom will need all his magic to get the better of Top Shot and taking the exacta of these two runners may be the best way to bet on the race.
