Trainer Mike de Kock’s decision to close up shop in KwaZulu-Natal is a blow for the province because it means some choicely bred thoroughbreds will no longer be competing at Greyville and Scottsville. During "Champions Season" from May to the end of July, we see some of the best horses in the land compete in the province, but it is hard to enthuse about some of the fare on offer for the rest of the year. On his website, De Kock, who has won the KwaZulu-Natal trainers’ title nine times, said: "This is a business decision. It makes no economic sense for us to keep the Summerveld stable going all year round. "We will still be raiding for three-to-four months in winter with a small, exclusive string during the champions season."
