Andrew Fortune’s bid for a second jockeys title has received a setback, with SA’s most charismatic rider being handed a 10-day suspension following an incident in a race at Turffontein in February. Fortune was found guilty at a National Horseracing Authority inquiry for "misusing his crop by deliberately using it towards and in close proximity to Flipflash making contact with Flipflash’s head in the fourth race at Turffontein on February 11". In addition to the ban, Fortune was also fined R25,000. Fortune has pleaded not guilty to the charge and has the right of appeal against the board’s finding. His legal team are sure to argue that — if the incident was severe enough to warrant a ban — why was the subsequent objection on behalf of Flipfhash overruled?
