Indigenous American talent in Hollywood is slowly giving way to an array of new stars, some Hispanic, some European. Nominations in the best picture and actress categories for the 2019 Oscars have, not for the first time, gone to non-Americans, with the best director’s nomination going to an outsider for the fifth time. Roma is the hot favourite, not only as best picture but in the foreign film category as well. African-American talent has also made a great impact, this time by veteran Spike Lee, whose spoof on white klansmen, BlacKkKlansmen, gets a nod in the best picture category. Yalitza Aparicio, a name as rare as its appearance on the ladies list, is one to watch in the best actress nomination. However, Lady Gaga, could spoil all that for the debutante Mexican.
