The manner in which the police went about "arresting" Higher Education and Training Deputy Minister Mduduzi Manana epitomises the ANC’s reluctance in arresting its own. The evidence was available and elementary. The complainant’s statement and a video were available and in the police’s possession. Although the alleged assault was uncomplicated in nature, it appears that the police are either too primitive to tackle this type of crime or they were overgenerous in their preferential treatment of Manana. Either way, the government has shown women the finger on Women’s Day. Nathan Cheiman Northcliff
