The problem with fundamentalists is they see evidence to support their belief systems even when none exists: coincidence becomes cause and rational discourse is abandoned. David Le Page has an axe to grind about fossil fuels (Signs are the climate is right for divesting from the fossil fuel industry, July 19). You generously allocated almost a full page to his views, and allowed him to attribute the recent Knysna fires to fossil-fuel induced climate change. I’m curious to know whether Le Page thinks that the Great Fire of 1869, which devastated the same section of the country and was the first such occurrence to be declared a national disaster, was also the result of our dependence on the internal combustion engine. If so, he may be hard-pressed to explain how it occurred 17 years before Mr Benz launched the horseless carriage, which has brought such devastation and ruin to our world. Michael FridjhonVia e-mail
