There has been much speculation about why President Jacob Zuma recalled Pravin Gordhan from an international road show intended to boost investor confidence. Gordhan and his deputy, Mcebisi Jonas, would have been home by Wednesday or Thursday anyway. Some hold that it was a sign of his strength; some that it was a sign of his weakness. Yet others have warned that we mustn’t look for rational or logical explanations. Either way, on the afternoon of Sunday March 26 a member of the public saw a large blue-light brigade leaving the Gupta family compound in Saxonwold. The next morning Zuma applied (unsuccessfully) to join the high court action by Gordhan and the major banks. On the same day he publicly and cryptically recalled Gordhan. Coincidence? Did anyone short the rand by any chance? SC WeissParktown North
