It was telling to hear our finance minister stating that the national minimum wage will be introduced in 2018. Only a few days previously, the president boldly trumpeted that the minimum wage would be introduced in 2017. Clearly, the government is running around in circles because the governing party’s alliance partner, Cosatu, has been holding it to ransom. This about-turn is not new. Readers will recall that when there were agreements in Nedlac on labour broking, these were reneged upon and Parliament passed legislation contrary to that that was agreed at Nedlac.
