In just about every country, community and cultural group the teacher is respected and revered. In some societies the teacher is afforded a status higher than any other professional person. It is therefore appalling, outrageous and shockingly disrespectful of the group of protesting students at the University of Cape Town to assault vice-chancellor Dr Max Price, who is also an elder. It is skewed logic to target and destroy institutions of higher learning when the anger should be directed at government and the governing party, which are responsible for policy and funding. Dr Price and other vice-chancellors are acutely aware that preserving the institution, its integrity and reputation is vital for continued quality higher education.
