As the man most obviously responsible for the fact that Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of the republic, is due to deliver his first (his first real) state of the nation address in parliament tonight, I thought for a while about picking up the heavy burden of writing it for him.

But no. This is going to be more about what he shouldn’t do, and I wouldn’t make a good speech-writer anyway. My job, my duty, is to readers of this column only. I write for you alone and on occasions, like this one, I take it upon myself to speak on your behalf even when it’s not comfortable...
