As last Thursday’s debate on the DA’s motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma came and went, it became clear no one really had confidence in anything. The DA certainly did not have any confidence in it succeeding. Not five seconds after it had failed, the party released into the twitterverse a series of prepared graphics damning all and sundry in the ANC, while its public representatives took to social media to explain the benefits of the Pyrrhic victory. Given that, it is rather odd that DA leader Mmusi Maimane should open his speech by describing SA as a land "where good triumphs over evil". A little patriotic romance is necessary for any political speech. But Maimane doesn’t so much serve it up as force-feed you. Where good triumphs over evil? What is this, a Disney movie? Anyway, he clearly doesn’t believe that to be true.\The one thing the DA would have wanted from all this, whatever the vote, would be for people to see a serious institution at work. Few would have left...
