The headline in The Guardian at 9.40am on Thursday told the entire story: “Manchester City Furious After Uefa Investigation is Sent for Final Judgment.” The dark cloud that had been hovering over them could soon burst and rain on the parade of the 2018/2019 Premier League Champions. City are furious. So, too, are their fans. The timing has taken the shine off an extraordinary season by City, a league victory that was earned through grit, brilliance and some good fortune. But the fortune that funds them has become a problem. City and their fans have known that the investigation was not going away after the allegations surfaced in November that millions of pounds in “sponsorship” money was a façade for direct investment by the club’s owner.
