PARLIAMENT’s portfolio committee on communications has resolved to institute an inquiry into the fitness of the SABC board to hold office. But the inquiry is unlikely to take place should the four remaining board members heed the call by MPs to resign. The portfolio committee said it would write to the remaining board members requesting that they tender their resignations, which will allow Parliament to appoint an interim board, pending the establishment of a new board. Should the members refuse to resign, the committee will in consultation with the National Assembly speaker, institute an inquiry in terms of the Broadcasting Act, and then recommend to the house that the board be dissolved. The recommendation will then be submitted to the appointing authority, in this case President Jacob Zuma, who will then have to dissolve the board.
