Seven bodies with gunshot wounds to the head and body have been found in a row under a bridge in KwaMashu, north of Durban.

“At this stage the motive is suspected to be vigilantism,” KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Brig Jay Naicker said.

KwaMashu police received information that the men’s bodies had been found underneath a railway bridge at the corner of Malandela Road and the M25 off ramp at 11pm on Monday.

“All seven deceased, who were in their thirties, were found lying next to a pillar of the railway bridge and in a straight line with gunshot wounds to the head and body. Police found 18 9mm spent cartridges at the crime scene,” he said.

Naicker said information taken at the crime scene indicates that the men lived under the bridge and were involved in criminality in the area.

“The case docket has been allocated to detectives from the provincial Organised Crime Unit and they are confident that they will be able to make a breakthrough,” he said.
