On Thursday, Deputy Police Minister Bongani Mkongi criticised South Africans whom he said prioritised the human rights of criminals‚ claiming they opted for darkness. Mkongi was speaking at the Western Cape launch of the police’s safer festive season campaign. "South Africans must choose. If they choose the human rights of criminals‚ they are choosing Satan‚ but if they protect the police and those people they are choosing God‚" said Mkongi. The event‚ held at the Velodrome Sports Complex in Bellville‚ was packed with South African Police Service (SAPS) members‚ metro police and traffic officers. Mkongi highlighted that inmates received three meals per day in Pollsmoor prison while also enjoying sports and recreation facilities.
