BLF members arrested after getting involved in Durban school racism protest
Six members of the Black First Land First (BLF) Student Movement were arrested after a protest against racism at Durban’s George Campbell School of Technology soured on Monday. This follows a week of turmoil at the school after pupils spoke out against what they called systemic racism. They complained staff regularly called them offensive names. The provincial education department suspended two staff members, and several pupils seen as protagonists in the protest. On Monday‚ tension boiled over as BLF students and a group of pupils tried to cajole other pupils into joining their protest outside the school property. Teachers locked the gates in response but protesters tried to force open a gate. A police source‚ who spoke on condition of anonymity‚ said BLF students had allegedly threatened to set a police officer on fire. The group was then arrested and detained.
