In a scene reminiscent of the social grants saga, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and private company Tasima will appear in the High Court in Pretoria this week to argue the legality of an "invalid" contract extension. The four-year court battle for the operation of the electronic National Traffic Information System (eNatis) system will resume on Thursday. The eNatis system ensures the registration of all vehicles on the country’s roads. The RTMC and Tasima are expected to argue who is responsible for the failure to transfer the system back to the department, as well as who owns the system that is becoming increasingly dysfunctional. Similar to the grants saga, in 2016 the Constitutional Court found that a 2010 contract extension granted by the department to Tasima for operating eNatis was invalid.
