AfriForum asks for detail on proposed Jacob Zuma statue in Groot Marico
A request under the Promotion of Access to Information Act was been sent to the office of North West premier Supra Mahumapelo‚ over the erection of a statue to honour President Jacob Zuma in Groot Marico. In the application‚ lobby group AfriForum asked for all relevant documentation on the budget and cost of the project‚ as well as the minutes of meetings in the provincial legislature. Hendrik Oosthuizen‚ AfriForum’s district co-ordinator for North West‚ said in a statement on Tuesday that the erection of a statue of Zuma was inappropriate, given the high levels of corruption and poverty in the country. Oosthuizen said the R6m the province wants to spend on the statue could be better used to buy more than 100‚000 bags of tar for the repair of potholes; appoint about 36 new police officers in the North West; upgrade and maintain infrastructure, and pay 31 new high school teachers for a year.
