In a second climb-down in as many days, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Tuesday dropped its charges against Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) head Robert McBride. NPA spokesman Luvuyo Mfaku said after consulting with witnesses, it had concluded the state would not be able to prove its case against McBride without reasonable doubt. The charges and McBride’s lengthy suspension by Police Minister Nathi Nhleko were related to his handling of a report into the 2010 rendition of Zimbabweans. He returned from suspension last month. The decision to drop charges against McBride dealt another blow to Nhleko, who had belatedly tried to have Parliament institute an inquiry into McBride in a bid to suspend him again. Nhleko wrote to Parliament in October to say his relationship with McBride had been damaged beyond repair and he was unable to work with him.
