Police Minister Nathi Nhleko’s attempt to prevent Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) executive director Robert McBride from returning to work on Wednesday has failed. Parliamentarians said the legislature’s portfolio committee on police did not have the authority to institute a process that might lead to the removal of the Ipid boss — only the National Assembly had such a mandate, but its next sitting was only scheduled for next Tuesday. The police committee last week received a letter from Nhleko, who asked that National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete direct the committee to initiate an inquiry into McBride’s conduct relating to two reports into the renditions of Zimbabweans and former Hawks head Anwa Dramat’s alleged role therein.
