The competition in the flight route between OR Tambo International Airport and Margate Airport, on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, is set to get stiffer. SA Airlink — a regional airline and privately owned business that operates as a franchisee of South African Airways (SAA) — announced it has applied to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality to obtain a licence to operate a Johannesburg to Margate route as soon as possible. This will pit SA Airlink against CemAir, a privately owned airline operating in SA that has been operating the OR Tambo International and Margate Airport route since October 2013. The route has been growing from strength to strength. Fuelling demand are Gauteng residents who own holiday homes on the South Coast.
