Former South African Olympic swimmer, Princess Charlene of Monaco, will be making another splash when she sponsors two races at Saturday’s big charity meeting at Turffontein. Princess Charlene, who married Prince Albert II in 2011, will be the toast of two sets of owners as she is putting up a prize of R250,000 for each of two maiden races. The meeting features the R1m Peermont Emperors Charity Mile in which 16 charities will benefit financially depending on the finishing place of the horse they have drawn in the 1,600m race. However, the princess’s father, Mike Wittstock, came up with the idea of trying to reward the lesser-known owners and trainers by sponsoring two maiden events to the tune of R250,000. A normal maiden plate carries a stake of about R90,000. Benoni-based Wittstock, a keen racing fan and owner himself, moved his family from Bulawayo to SA in 1989.
