Support for the ANC is shrinking, but it is not clear who is benefiting from the steep decline which is not benefiting opposition parties, a new poll by research firm Ipsos shows. Conducted in May, the poll showed that 47% of those surveyed would vote for the governing party if an election was held the next day. That is a steep drop from the 62% of the vote the party won in the 2014 general election and is also less than the 54% vote cast for it in the 2016 local government elections. The DA would get 21% of the vote, the Ipsos poll showed — below the 27% it achieved in the last local government election and one percentage point below what it won in the general election in 2014. The poll also showed a decline to 5% from the 8.2% the EFF won in the local government elections in 2016.
