THE battle for the African National Congress’s (ANC’s) largest region, eThekwini, has taken a turn with Durban mayor James Nxumalo, who had narrowly beat former regional treasurer Zandile Gumede for the position of the chairman, coming out with guns blazing on Wednesday.In an open letter, he denied allegations that he or members of his camp had paid an alleged bribe of R1m for conference delegates to vote for him.This accusation — along with the disqualification of three branches — formed the basis of a complaint written to ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe, ultimately leading to the nullifying of the conference results.The regional conference took place in mid-February after three postponements.
