Stellenbosch University management must urgently step in and cancel the Institute of Race Relations (IRR) and David Bullard event due to be held on its campus this week. Under the heading of “On the Verge of Catastrophe?” this conservative panel gives credence to white-fear tropes of a dystopian SA future with advertised talking points such as “Will your children have a future in this country?” and “Will there be decent universities?”. David Bullard has become a hero for the overtly alt-right as well as the covertly alt-right (now masquerading as “libertarians”) because of his controversial and racist utterances. Add to that the IRR’s slip of the mask over the past few years from think tank and pollster to a political organisation now partnering with AfriForum, and the university will be playing host to a convention of white afro-pessimism on a grand scale.
