‘JG Zuma marathon well-positioned as Comrades qualifier’ may have brought a small grimace and a smirk to Pravin Gordhan and his supporters
On Wednesday at about 1.23pm, on the day a hero was laid to rest and his thoughts given space to rage and grow and inspire, a news release arrived from the good people at Athletics SA. It was not, let me be clear, a release issued by Athletics SA, but forwarded by them on behalf of the organisers of a race to honour a man who has shown himself to be less than honourable. "JG Zuma marathon well-positioned as Comrades qualifier" is a headline that may have brought a small grimace and a smirk to Pravin Gordhan and his supporters. Anyway, let’s read on. "The third edition of the JG Zuma Marathon is a well-placed qualifier for one of the world’s respected ultra-races, the Comrades Marathon on June 4." Gordhan, a comrade in good standing and one respected by the SACP, the Comrades’ comrades, is currently trying to be disqualified as a comrade by his boss.
