Draft standards for leopard hunting will apply if ban is lifted
Draft norms and standards for the management and monitoring of leopard hunting were issued this week and aim to stabilise the leopard population
The Environmental Affairs Department issued draft norms and standards this week for the management and monitoring of the hunting of leopards in SA. They were issued despite the department having extended the ban on leopard hunting for the whole of this year. This means that the regulations will apply when the department lifts the ban, but on Friday the department spokesperson Albie Modise said the norms and standards would govern the hunting of leopards even if there was no ban. When the department announced the extension of the leopard ban in January‚ it said the decision was based on the review of available scientific information on the status and recovery of leopard populations in SA. It said the Scientific Authority recommended to Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa that‚ based on the information received and reviewed‚ there should be no leopard hunting for 2017.
