The Department of Energy has revealed that it spent R88m last year on a review of the state of readiness for government’s nuclear new build programme. The information was provided in a written reply by Energy Minister David Mahlobo to a question posed by EFF MP Marshall Dlamini. In other replies, the minister answered questions about the dispute with the auditor-general over the department’s understated irregular expenditure; and the reasons for the delay in finalising the report on the illegal sale of 10.3-million barrels of SA’s strategic oil reserves in December 2015. Mahlobo said the review of the state of readiness for the nuclear new build programme was undertaken by Mahlako-A-Phahla Investment in terms of an initial three-month contract, which lasted from May 27 to August 26 2016; and a further four-month contract from September 1 to December 2016.
