Corruption in SA was part of a "large-scale design for nefarious, mafia-style control" of public enterprises, significant government agencies and state organs, South African Council of Churches (SACC) general secretary Bishop Malusi Mpumlwana said on Tuesday. The bishop made the opening presentation at a meeting of Parliament’s portfolio committee on public enterprises which has launched an inquiry into alleged corruption at Eskom. Tuesday’s meeting heard reports on corruption from the SACC, the Organisation Against Tax Abuse and the Public Affairs Research Institute. The bishop said there was evidence of inappropriate control of state systems by a power elite that was pivoted around President Jacob Zuma "that is systematically siphoning the assets of the state and blunting any form of law enforcement".
