President Jacob Zuma rushed over to Grand Parade in Cape Town after an eventful state of the nation address in Parliament on Thursday evening, where he declared 2017 the year of "radical economic transformation". The president attended an ANC gathering alongside members of the party’s national executive committee and leaders of the party’s Western Cape provincial structures. Other than points of order from opposition parties and some ANC MPs, which chewed up an hour-and-a-half of the time allotted to Sona, the address provided little in the way of new developments in government policy or its implementation.
