Details of the long-awaited draft Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) and Integrated Energy Plan (IEP) will emerge next week, when the Department of Energy briefs the media on Tuesday. The plans — which set the basis for future energy planning as well as the respective shares of the different energy sources — were adopted by the Cabinet two weeks ago but have been withheld while the department incorporated the Cabinet’s amendments and the inputs by other departments. The draft that will be released for public consultation will not be the same as the draft submitted by the department to the Cabinet. Keenly awaited is the share allocated to nuclear energy, in the light of the sharp decline in the cost of renewable energy and the fiscal constraints inhibiting the execution of the government’s ambitious nuclear plan for 9,600MW of nuclear energy.
