Lawyers for Fees Must Fall activist Mcebo Dlamini have written to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), suggesting that charges against him may have been politically motivated because of a meeting at Luthuli House attended by prosecutions head Shaun Abrahams. Abrahams has been roundly criticised for attending the meeting in October — at which President Jacob Zuma was present —at the headquarters of a political party. The criticism was exacerbated because it was the following day that he announced fraud charges against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan. Many believed the charges were trumped up and politically motivated, especially when they were withdrawn some weeks later. Abrahams has emphatically denied that the Gordhan charges were discussed at the meeting, and insisted it was about the student fee protests.
