Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane said in Parliament he could not answer a question on why his department agreed to the transfer of funds from the Optimum Mine Rehabilitation Trust. Replying in writing to a question by Congress of the People MP Deidre Carter, Zwane said that “as the question relates to a matter which is now the subject of ongoing legal proceedings, the minister is constrained from providing any details or information in this regard”. The court proceedings referred to involve the application brought by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan for a declaratory order that he is not legally entitled to interfere in the relationships between commercial banks and their clients. Gordhan came under pressure from the Guptas after the four major banks cut ties with their companies.  The case is proceeding.
