The City of Cape Town is preparing to take Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson to court for allegedly stalling in giving the council permission to buy electricity from independent green producers. Speaking on the last day of the World Energy Cities Partnership annual meeting in Cape Town‚ De Lille said the city had briefed lawyers. "I have written to the national minister of energy on a number of occasions over the last year asking for her permission to begin purchasing electricity directly from independent power producers‚" said De Lille. The law dictated that Joemat-Pettersson should consult the National Energy Regulator and then decide on the city’s plea‚ but the minister had ignored her. "I seek no favours from this minister. It is about time that she does her job and performs her constitutional functions‚" said De Lille.
