PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma has officially appointed advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane as the new public protector for the next seven years, the Presidency said on Thursday.The appointment would take effect on October 15, spokesman Bongani Ngqulunga said.The announcement was made on the Presidency website on the same day that Zuma is due to be grilled by outgoing Public Protector Thuli Madonsela for an investigation into perceptions of state capture which many expect to implicate the Gupta family. Mkhwebane was recommended by the National Assembly, which voted overwhelmingly in her favour of her candidacy — 263 for and 79 against.The DA objected to her candidacy, raising concern about her links with the country’s intelligence agencies.Among other jobs listed on her CV, Mkhwebane worked in the State Security Agency (SSA).The DA alleged she worked for the agency as a spy in China, which Mkhwebane denied.
