THE recent appointment of seasoned African National Congress (ANC) MP John Jeffery as deputy justice and constitutional development minister will leave a gaping hole in Parliament’s justice committee, with the potential to delay the processing of the controversial Legal Practice Bill.Mr Jeffery is a long-serving member of the committee and has worked together with opposition MPs to process many contentious pieces of legislation including the Protection of Personal Information Bill and the Legal Practice Bill.He has been driving the ANC’s effort to have the Legal Practice Bill approved by both houses before the life of the fourth Parliament ends before next year’s elections.If and when the bill becomes law it will dramatically change the landscape of the legal profession in South Africa by placing both advocates and attorneys under the authority of a Legal Practice Council.
