A Brazilian court on Monday granted BHP and Vale a 150-day extension to settle civil claims for the Samarco dam disaster in November 2015.

BHP said in a statement on Tuesday morning that the 12th Federal Court had given it until April 20 to continue negotiations for the settlement of public civil claims from the collapse of the dam, which resulted in 19 deaths.

Brazilian prosecutors are demanding that BHP and Vale, as the owners of the Samarco dam, pay fines totalling $53.7bn.

BHP said it and Vale had requested more time to negotiate a settlement.
