To the objective bystander it is turning out to be quite a summer. There is the Steinhoff meltdown — billions in pension money are reportedly lost. And this came just when we got a temporary reprieve from the Life Esidimeni hearing, which has uncovered a grotesque failure of care for the most vulnerable. While we struggle to figure out the doublespeak of MultiChoice, having resigned ourselves to the shenanigans at Eskom, Transnet, South African Airways and the SABC, comes the astonishing court ruling removing the national director of public prosecutions from his position, although the inevitable appeal is under way. Amidst all of this we continue to watch the rolling twists and turns and court battles and allegations of militia-induced voting and a money-for-votes leadership nomination contest of the ruling party.
