I was not surprised when the Black Business Council announced it had suspended its president, Danisa Baloyi, and laid criminal charges of fraud and theft for the misappropriation of R5m, a donation by Airports Company SA that "went missing". The reason given by the Black Business Council chairman for Baloyi’s suspension is there is "prima facie" evidence that she is implicated. The reason I was not surprised is that Baloyi has left a trail of controversies. In 2007, when she was a director of Fidentia, R1.9bn went missing from the Living Hands Trust, the savings of 47,000 widows and orphans of mine workers. And when Fidentia went into curatorship, an amount of R8m "borrowed" by Baloyi was found in the accounts. Then followed her "resignation" as chancellor of Fort Hare University and her removal from the boards of Absa Group and Absa Bank. Such people keep coming back into top government and private sector jobs, a reflection of the ethos of impunity that characterises the Zuma admin...
