Exams start at the University of Cape Town (UCT) on Wednesday. The university does not have any leeway to postpone exams, and to deal with the threat of disruptive students, a huge marquee has been erected on one of the sports fields as an exam venue. It seats 3,000 people. The marquee is surrounded by three concentric rows of security fencing, and police with dogs are patrolling the perimeter. Wow! Talk about "securitising" the campus! For those who have decried the manner in which University of Cape Town vice-chancellor Max Price and his executive have handled protests since 2015, the only word that comes to mind is … schadenfreude.
