He attributed his debilitating illness to poisoning, telling Business Day at the time that he had "let his guard down" at a birthday party and suffered from a long and painful illness thereafter. Now The Cat is a member of the group of ANC provincial chairs loosely described as the premier league. It includes ANC Free State chairman Ace Magashule and North West chair Supra Mahumapelo.
