The Cat is Back. This legendary quote was attributed to ANC Mpumalanga chairman David Mabuza after nearly 50 days of sick leave in 2015. He attributed his debilitating illness to poisoning, telling Business Day at the time that he had "let his guard down" at a birthday party and suffered from a long and painful illness thereafter. Now The Cat is a member of the group of ANC provincial chairs loosely described as the premier league. It includes ANC Free State chairman Ace Magashule and North West chair Supra Mahumapelo. Along with the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal, the ANC Youth League and the ANC Women’s League, they are seen as President Jacob Zuma’s most powerful backers in the party and have been widely expected to help him sweep his preferred candidate, former AU Commission chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, to power when the ANC elects his successor in December.
