Metros chided for underspending
Gauteng finance MEC says Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni failed to meet infrastructure targets in the previous financial year
Gauteng’s three metros collectively underspent almost R3bn on infrastructure in the previous financial year, says finance MEC Barbara Creecy. She told reporters in Johannesburg, at the release of the Gauteng audit outcomes, that the municipal audits were being done and a proper statement on the 2016-17 financial year could be made only after this was completed. However, Creecy said that her major concern with regard to Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni was underspending on infrastructure. "I think that it is very serious, because what we understand is the relationship between public infrastructure spend and job creation. So that, I think, is my area of concern," she said. During the course of the previous financial year, there was a change of administration in Johannesburg and Tshwane after the local government polls.
