On Wednesday, amid tears, Communications Minister Ayanda Dlodlo, announced the Government Communication Information System (GCIS) media centre will now be called the Ronnie Mamoepa Media Centre. Mamoepa, who was spokesperson for Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and one of the youngest prisoners on Robben Island, died on Saturday, having been in a coma following a stroke. "Ronnie represented a generation of those who gave up their childhood ... for a life of struggle to ensure the liberation of all South Africans, when there was no prospects of rewards or recognition," said Dlodlo, speaking at a service held for government communicators and the media. Mamoepa’s official memorial will be held on Thursday in Pretoria, and his funeral will take place on Saturday.
