NORTHAM Platinum has selected Tenova Pyromet to build a second platinum group metal furnace at its Thabazimbi mine and processing plant to give it capacity for planned expansion.The existing 15MW furnace has capacity for concentrate from its nearby Zondereinde mine, its new Booysendal mine and third-party concentrate from Pallinghurst Resources’ Sedibelo mine.The new 10MW furnace, which will cost between R500m and R600m and be brought into production within two years, will handle concentrate from expanded Booysendal production.It will also handle material from the Everest mine Northam has bought from Aquarius Platinum.The furnace was designed to cope with concentrate derived from the chrome-rich UG2 ore body these projects would deliver, said Rene Rautenbach, Northam’s manager of projects and strategy.
