THE bright spot in a subdued set of results to end-June from gaming and leisure giant Sun International was that its new casino at Menlyn Maine in Tshwane will open sooner than expected. Speaking at the release of full-year results on Monday, Sun CEO Graeme Stephens said The Time Square casino and entertainment centre development was about six weeks ahead of schedule. "The developers have broken just about every record for the amount of cement poured," he said. Stephens said the casino portion of the development was set to open in April 2017. He conceded that the budget — thanks mainly to rand weakness when securing the imported gaming equipment — had come under some pressure and stood at R4.1bn. The Time Square casino development was initiated after Sun was allowed to transfer its casino licence from the nearby Morula casino to the more vibrant Menlyn node. The new development will rank as one of the biggest casinos in SA, but also cost Sun about R750m to settle with gaming groups ...
