South African professional cyclist Louis Meintjes, who finished eighth overall in the Tour de France in both 2017 and 2016, is returning to Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka, the reincarnation of the African team that launched him onto the international stage. Meintjes, riding for UAE Team Emirates in the 2017 Tour de France, also placed second in the white jersey competition for the best young rider, losing out for the second year running to Briton Adam Yates. Meintjes began his international career with what was then MTN for Qhubeka, riding for MTN in 2013, 2014 and 2015, before leaving for Team Lampre-Merida for the 2016 season. His return to the African team founded by Doug Ryder gives Team Dimension Data its first serious contender to achieve its goal of a podium in one of cycling’s three grand tours, of France, Italy and Spain.
